School Magazine Photo Research

I will analyse the following photographs which show students with their exam results on the day that they receive them. I am looking at these photos in detail as this issue of the school magazine I am creating will be focused on the topic of the students’ exam result achievements.

I like that way that this photo shows the students looking unopposed and genuinely pleased with the results which they have gained. The fact that it is a close up image allows you to understand their emotions. However this photo is a wide shot therefore would not be the appropriate dimensions to be suitable for a magazine cover. I also feel that the background of this image is too busy and would have added more focus to the students if there was not so much going on in the background. I don’t think i will want my image to be shot so side on that the writing on the paper work can be seen, i would prefer it to be more at a diagonal angle.

This is a similar image that shows the same concept as the previous one, two students looking at their results with pleased expressions. Although this photo is very similar, and is not a suitable shape for a magazine cover, I prefer this image to the last as it does not have such a busy background that distracts attention from the focus point of the photograph. The lighting in this photograph is a lot better than the previous; however I feel that the left side of the photo is too bright with the colour of the girls’ hair and her white top as well as the heavy lighting. I think this photo could have been cropped at the end of the girl on the lefts paper to get rid of distractions such as the random arm.

Differently from the previous two, this shot would be an acceptable shape to fit onto the magazine front page. Similarly to this, in my picture I plan to use two people who have both gained their exam results. I like that they are both holding the certificates however I do not want to create a picture that is posed like this. I think it could be improved by having them looking at / looking at each others exam results of having captured them in conversation about it. This would make the photo look less posed and unprofessional. I also do not like the background environment that this picture has been taken in and I will take my photograph outside where natural lighting will be used.

This is another photograph that would be an acceptable shape to fit onto a magazine front cover. Although it is not two students which is what I wish to use for my cover, I like the way the two people in the picture are close together and looking at the same piece of paper. This is an option will try when taking my photographs however I will have to adapt it as it is not a mother and daughter relationship which I want to show. I also like the way that the photograph has been taking outside in a natural environment, an area similar to this is where I will take my photographs as I think an outside shot would work better for the theme of the magazine.
